On Saturday morning in Eger, after eating breakfast in the hotel, some of us headed into town to explore and check out the local market, which turned out to only be produce and meat, so I opted to wander around and do some window shopping and found some quirky things along the way. I also crashed the party of one of the tour group couples and had a coffee with them at the Depresso Kitchen (best name ever...reminded me of how my dad used to call Depeche Mode "Depress Mode"...honestly, spot on, Dad).
After that, we met back up as a group and walked to a local school where one of the English teachers had us meet with a few of her students to get to know them, what they're learning, what they do for fun, etc. The teacher then sat us down and told us about the school and the students and we got to ask them questions and they even sang us a song. We also explored their science lab and gym, then went into the cafeteria to have lunch, which it was a mushroom soup, spaetzle, some type of meat, and dessert with coffee. It was a really cool and unique experience!
After that we headed to a local winery where we started with a shot of grappa (which kicked my ass), followed by tasting of white and red wines. They had a terrible organ player/singer that sounded like a wedding singer reject (with a bad toupee). He played a lot of cheesy songs...it was a hoot. Our hostess was so much fun, and she was joined by the same English teacher we had met with at the school earlier that day. I bought a bottle of red wine and a rose...though the rose never made it home with me and I can say why here on my blog. lol
From there, we hopped back on the bus and made our way to Budapest. After checking into our hotel and having our guide give us a brief orientation of the city, we headed to dinner at a fancier than usual restaurant where we enjoyed the salad, duck leg, and a tiramisu type of dessert in a glass. Most of us skipped the wine having had way too much earlier in the day and just stuck with water. I crashed hard that night...was a long, but eventful and fun day.
